Former DA Pamela Price Launches Hotline for Survivors of Sexual Assault by Disgraced Former Congressman Eric Swalwell
Oakland, CA — Eric Swalwell has survived and thrived for the past 15 years as a leading figure in Alameda County politics and the national Democratic party. In the words of one survivor, Eric Swalwell thought he was “untouchable.”
Swalwell’s decades-long abuse of women started in Alameda County.
In Alameda County, under the longtime mentorship of District Attorney Nancy O’Malley and Republican Sheriff Greg Ahern, Swalwell must have appeared to be untouchable.
Swalwell’s close relationships with DA O’Malley and Sheriff Ahern would have discouraged any victim of sexual assault from coming forward. And now, interim District Attorney Jones Dickson is leaving victims to fend for themselves without any support from the District Attorney’s office.
The Manhattan District Attorney has launched an investigation and published a hotline for victims to contact his office with information that might be relevant to the investigation. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has launched an investigation into claims that Swalwell raped Ms. Lonna Drewes in Los Angeles in 2018.
The Alameda County District Attorney has not taken any steps to either launch an investigation or explain to the public why she is not launching an investigation. It has been a week since Swalwell resigned from Congress in disgrace. Over the past week, the interim District Attorney has not moved from “evaluating” to actually investigating.
It appears that the interim District Attorney is so beholden to Eric Swalwell and his suite of wealthy donors that she is either unable or unwilling to launch an investigation to identify victims in Alameda County.
Someone must act on behalf of the women of Alameda County. I have been standing up for survivors of sexual assault since I sued Yale in 1977 as the lead plaintiff in the first sexual harassment lawsuit under Title IX. I dedicated my professional life to standing up to sexual predators like Eric Swalwell and holding them accountable.
As the District Attorney of Alameda County in my first term, we focused on crimes against women and children. I hired a leading expert in domestic violence prosecutions to lead our DV Unit. I created the first-ever Gender Justice Bureau to improve our prosecutions and coordination of our resources to address the full spectrum of gender-based crimes. I supported the development of the first-ever Electronic Suspected Child Abuse Reporting System (ESCARS) which launched shortly after I left the office.
It is disturbing that too many politicians were unwilling to stand up or speak out as Eric Swalwell demeaned, exploited and abused women. It is even more disturbing that the wheels of justice in Alameda County are not moving to address Eric Swalwell’s crimes against women, against his family and against our community.
We need a full investigation of Eric Swalwell’s misconduct by the California Attorney General. The interim Alameda County District Attorney has a conflict as she has benefitted immensely from her association with Swalwell, receiving at least $55,000 from his supporters for her election campaign.
As a former judge, and now an officer of the Court, Jones Dickson should acknowledge her conflict and recuse herself from any investigation. Since the Public Accountability Unit I created was disbanded within the first 10 days of her taking office, she should immediately refer this case to the Attorney General. Only then will the survivors know that politics will not play a role in holding Eric Swalwell accountable for his crimes.
For more than a decade, Eric Swalwell has misled the public and Alameda County voters. When he called for my recall in 2024, Eric Swalwell knew that his conduct might be exposed if Alameda County had an independent
District Attorney with a history of boldly standing up for women. I am still boldly standing up for justice for women in my community. This hotline is a first step in holding Eric Swalwell accountable to the people of Alameda County.
